After Your Programme

Post-Training Aftercare

Your dog's training doesn't end when they come home. Here's how to maintain everything they've learned and keep them thriving for years to come.

The Journey Continues

What Happens After Training?

Your dog has built a strong foundation with us. Now it's up to you to maintain and build on it. Here's what to expect in the weeks and months ahead.

Week 1 Home

Settle-In Period

Let your dog adjust to being home. Keep things calm, maintain their feeding and exercise routine, and practice basic commands for short periods.

Weeks 2–4

Build Consistency

Gradually increase the difficulty of commands. Introduce distractions slowly. Your dog should be responding reliably to all commands by week 4.

Months 2–3

Real-World Application

Take training into real-world scenarios — parks, busy streets, around other dogs. This is where the hard work pays off.

Ongoing

Lifelong Maintenance

Training is never truly 'done.' Keep practising regularly and reach out if you need help. A quick refresher session every 6–12 months keeps skills sharp.

Keep Them Sharp

Maintaining Training at Home

Follow these key principles to keep your dog's training sharp. Consistency at home is the single biggest factor in long-term success.

Consistency is Key

Use the exact same commands and hand signals your trainer used. Dogs thrive on repetition — even 10–15 minutes of practice daily will keep their skills sharp.

Daily Practice Sessions

Short, focused sessions work better than long ones. Aim for 2–3 sessions of 10 minutes each throughout the day, rather than one long session.

Reinforce the Commands

Practice sit, stay, heel, recall, and place commands daily. Gradually increase distractions and distance as your dog becomes more reliable.

Positive Reinforcement

Reward good behaviour with praise, treats, or play. Never punish your dog for mistakes — redirect and reward the correct behaviour instead.

Maintain Boundaries

If your trainer established rules (e.g., no jumping on furniture, waiting at doors), stick to them. Inconsistent rules will confuse your dog and undo progress.

Socialise Regularly

Continue exposing your dog to new people, dogs, and environments. This keeps them confident and well-adjusted in different situations.
